Community solar programs, also known as shared solar or a solar garden, enables multiple participants to collectively benefit from a local solar array. Similar to a community garden or farm share, community solar allows small businesses and residents within the same utility region to subscribe to solar energy generated from an off-site array.

Each member of the solar farm reserves a share of panels in the local array, sized to match their annual electricity usage. Every month, the panels in their share generate dollar value credits, which are applied to offset the energy bill. These credits are purchased from the solar farm at a special discounted rate.
