Changing Your Benefits

Generally, you can only change your benefit elections during Open Enrollment. But every once in a while, life intervenes. You get married or add a child to your family. So we also give you the option of changing your benefit elections when you experience a qualified life event. Be sure to initiate changes with HR within 30 days of the life event.

Qualified Life Event

A qualified life event or family status change refers to certain life events that allow you to make changes to benefits outside of the open enrollment period. These eligible changes determined by the federal government, typically include marriage, divorce, the birth or adoption of a child.  Additionally, significant changes in a dependent’s employment status or eligibility for other coverage may also qualify as a family status change event.

How to Make Changes

To adjust your benefit selections, you need to inform the Human Resources Department within 30 days of the qualifying event date. Failure to notify within this timeframe for a family status change or special enrollment period means your next chance to modify your benefit plan will be during the subsequent annual open enrollment period in October, per IRS regulations.
