Prescription Drugs

When you’re in need of medication, time and money are precious. Fortunately, with prescription coverage, even the toughest prescriptions become more manageable.

Know Your Prescription Benefit

CVS CareMark, a national network of 65+ pharmacies and 24/7 customer support manages your prescription benefit plan.  You can pick up your medication at any pharmacy in the network.

Prescription co-pays fall into the following tiers:

  • Generic. A generic RX has the same active ingredients, strength and dosage as it is brand-name equal.  They become available after the brand’s patent expires, allowing manufacturers to produce the medication at lower costs.
  •  Preferred.  Brand-name RX are more expensive due to the research & development expenses, patent protection, limited competition, marketing costs, etc.  Some patients may require a specific formulation, dosage, or delivery mechanism that is only available in the brand-name version.
  • Non-Preferred.  Specialty medications that may cost thousands of dollars per dose or treatment course.  These medications require special handling and administration by a healthcare provider.

Prescription Co-Pays
Generic$10.00
Preferred$30.00
Non-Preferred$65.00

Some medications may be covered at 100%.  Examples of $0 medications are products for tobacco cessation, medicine used prior to screenings for certain health conditions in adults, vaccines & immunizations to prevent certain illnesses, contraceptives for women, & more.

Formularies & Prior Authorization

A formulary is a list of commonly covered drugs and a tool to help you and your healthcare provider determine lowest-cost treatment options.  Formularies are updated throughout the year as new drugs become available and prices change.   Check out this short video for a deeper dive on drug formularies.

Prior Authorization.  Some medications may need prior authorization to be covered under the plan and to get the best costs.  This short video explains why you might need prior authorization for your RX.
